Age is a number, some people say and they might be right. However, in sports is just more than a number…
“I would like to announce through this press release that S63 will be my last season in competition. I will wait a few days of S64 to make it official. Many thanks to my teams, specially manager Williamson for trusting in my abilities to lead, my team mates and staff for your valuable support and the national team; for making my dream come true of riding with the national colors.”
“It’s so shocking to see how much the team has changed since I’ve arrived here. The improvement not just of performance, but the skills of all of us here is evident and I know even retired, this team will be high sooner than later, thank you for all the memories and great time,” an emotional Boris Bitao mumbled, surrounded by the boss and some of the riders. After 4 seasons defending our colours, Boris has decided to retire. The israeli cyclist feels it’s the best moment to leave it, being an important rider and now with his spot filled by other hill sprinters.
When he came, he was the most expensive buy (350k) and not so young (just turned 32 years old) to make a good return but he proved wrong everyone with his good legs. He was a personal bet of the manager and an old flame of his own, believing one day he would count with his amazing skills for the good of the team.
Mr. Bitao started the curse of the captains, which consist to get injuries in the first races with the team. Once he recovered a good shape, his talent shined and brought many results and cash for the squad, that grew up in no time. Now, Boris Bitao becomes a legend of Amstel Flanders and who knows, maybe in the future he can find a job as trainer for upcoming generations.
This hasn’t been a good season for Sam Azargoshasp (32). Many off days and bad luck in his main targets, maybe it’s the age… who knows. The fact is, Sam will turn 33 the next season and there’s no a clear candidate to replace him as sprint captain. The trainees have failed and the trio Aksentiev, Fayard and Noite have lights and shadows upon them. Maybe an outsider as Nkurunziza can try to step up and prove his worth.
It’s the decline of a formidable duo, it’s the end of the Azargoshasp-Bitao’s reign and the question is; Are these winds of change the preview to witness the rise of a new dynasty at Amstel Flanders? Time will tell… (February).
Over n’ Out.
